IT for healthcare & clinics — frequently asked questions
What IT compliance requirements do BC healthcare clinics need to meet?
BC healthcare clinics must comply with PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) and BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) for patient data protection. Requirements include encryption of patient data, access controls limiting data to authorized staff, audit logs of data access, incident response procedures, and business associate agreements with IT providers. We supply a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) as standard for all healthcare clients.
Can you support our EMR (electronic medical records) system?
Yes — we work with the major EMR systems used by BC clinics including OSCAR, Accuro, Wolf, and others. We configure your network to prioritize EMR traffic (QoS), design segmented VLANs to isolate medical devices, coordinate with EMR vendors for technical support, and ensure your backup strategy covers your EMR database with tested restore procedures.
What happens if our clinic has a data breach?
If your clinic experiences a data breach involving patient information, you have legal obligations under PIPEDA and PIPA to report significant breaches to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and notify affected individuals. Our incident response plan documents exactly what to do, who to contact, and what to preserve for investigation. As your IT provider, we assist with breach containment, forensic investigation, and remediation.
How do you handle IT support for after-hours clinic emergencies?
For critical system outages affecting patient care — such as EMR unavailability or complete network failure — we provide priority response outside business hours. Our monitoring systems alert us to critical issues before your staff notices them. For healthcare clients, we define specific P1 scenarios and response SLAs during onboarding to ensure your clinic's critical systems are always protected.
